Putting a Stop to Weight Stigma
HUGE, HUGE, HUGE career milestone happening this week—I step into the role of adjunct professor at UCFs College of Medicine. What will I be teaching? Culinary Medicine! And you can bet that with the full attention of these fourth year medical students I’ll be seizing this opportunity to address weight stigma.
I met my students yesterday and one of them was brave enough to share her truth with me. She doesn’t know how to effectively counsel patients about diet and exercise. You see, she’s in a larger body and is concerned patients are going to judge her for this.
Weight stigma is all around us: patients are afraid of being judged by their doctors, doctors are afraid of being judged by their patients, larger bodies are afraid of being judged by smaller bodies, smaller bodies are afraid of being judged by larger bodies… the cycle is vicious and no BODY wins. It’s time to stop the weight stigma!
This is my truth. What’s yours?
